Take the Initiative to a Healthier Living by Testing your pH Levels

The pH level of a substance determines how acidic or alkaline it is. Soil pH is important because it determines how effectively plants can take up nutrients from the soil. You cannot get a high yield from a soil that is acidic. The same holds true for the human body. A healthy human body must maintain an acidic and alkaline balance.

You can perform pH testing in the comfort of your own home. It will provide you with an indication of the general health of your body. Use the information to help you make adjustments in your lifestyle to maximise your chances of health and well-being. Keep the body’s pH in balance and it will stay healthy.

Through pH testing you evaluate your health by simply reading numbers. According to health website Vitality Plus, “pH is measured in logarithmic units like the Richter scale. Each number represents a 10-fold change in the acidity/alkalinity of the water. So a pH reading of 5 is ten times more acidic than a pH reading of six and 100 times more acidic than a neutral reading of 7.”

The higher the pH reading the more alkaline the substance is. Seven is a neutral reading, and numbers below that fall in the acidic range. For optimal health you should be slightly alkaline, ideally around 7.4. You can purchase pH testing litmus strips at any health food store or you can buy them at Alkaway. Test yourself everyday upon waking up while on an empty stomach and track the changes. Saliva or urine is commonly used for at home pH tests. An increase in acidity comes from ageing and diet. As you begin making changes in your lifestyle to maximise your health and well-being you will notice changes in your body’s pH reading. You will become healthier and more alkaline!

Journaling tip

Use your wellness journal to track your body’s pH levels. You can do this in the observations section of the journal. Make small changes in your lifestyle, food habits, drink more water and record your pH levels in your wellness journal. Track your progress here! While big changes that we wish to see in our health might take a little longer to become evident, changes in pH occur quite quickly. If you stick to a heathy diet for three days, you will notice pH levels change from acidic to alkaline. It’s a great motivator!
